Films depicting luxurious boats such as the Titanic, create an idea that being in a luxury cruise is a privilege that just a few people can be lucky enough to have in their lifetime. Apart from the extraordinary cost that would prevent many people from considering a cruise seriously, is also the posh lifestyle associated with it that would put many people off. In all those movies people appear to be wearing very formal and ultra uncomfortable clothes that do not really fit into the idea of travelling!
What is wrong though, is that in most of those films the boats were not actually cruise boats. All those on board were people who would like to reach America, some of them for leisure and some others for immigration purposes. During those times people were using boats in order to cover huge distances as planes were not that publicly available yet. An up to date example would be a cruise plane flying for hours and hours with the sole purpose of its passengers having fun while on board, all the way from London to Tokyo.
The reason why I make all those arguments is because I want to stress that the vast majority of people have a completely wrong idea about the kind of people that would take up a cruise. Definitely there are many different kinds of cruises and not all of them are for the super rich.
Cunard cruises being from around £300 for a 2 day journey from North Germany to Portsmouth on Queen Elizabeth. This is how much would cost a 2 day trip to Rome staying in a 4 star hotel. Oceania cruises and Silversea cruises similarly offer low budget options for those who cannot afford paying a fortune.
It is true that luxury cruises are mainly for the middle-aged and pensioners but it is wrong to believe that they are exclusively for them. However, if anyone would like to get a glimpse of how such a cruise feels like, that would still be possible. The vast majority of people who have actually tried it claim that it was one of the bets experiences ever!
