Eurotunnel France is going to see an expansion in operations as the French controlled company has just bought GBRf freight trains. But there are many people in the UK who are a little bit disappointed with this takeover as GBRf freight trains was the third largest freight train operator in the UK. However the French company has just paid First Group, who used to control the trains, 31 million pounds for the pleasure. Many people in the UK are upset at how the French have taken this opportunity to gain further access to the UK freight business as they see it as a foreign raid. One of the main reasons why First Group have had to sell this part of their operations is because they did not realise how expensive it would be when they decided to try to bid for the supply of school buses to the United States – a move which has actually led to quite a bit of debt. And the fact that First Group only took over GRBf freight trains since 2003 means that the 300 people who work there have been left quite shocked by the sale.
This latest acquisition is part of Eurotunnels attempt to further move cross channel freight from boats to the tunnel thus increasing profits. These trains do offer many advantages over the ferries and there are few that doubt that this will all add to Eurotunnels fortunes. There has been growth in the use of trains for freight over the last number of years but the recession saw a definite slow down; however there is hope that train freight will soon start growing again. Eurotunnel France are hoping that their purchase of GBRf freight trains will help stimulate continued growth.
There can be few who can argue with the fact that there are a number of businesses in the UK who will benefit from this takeover, despite the fact that there are also many people in the UK who are unhappy with this acquisition of another UK company by foreign hands. It is hoped that this French takeover will encourage growth of freight being moved across the channel by train as it will bring many business advantages to the UK.
