The island of Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, and is filled with stunning natural beauty. Here are a few things that the island has to offer.
- The Na Pali Coast State Park
The view of a this park is 22 miles of volcanic cliffs that is accessible from helicopter or boat. Many tourism places have the opportunity to see these areas.
- Wailua River and Hidden Valley Falls
The river offers a lovely backdrop for a relaxing kayaking or boating day-trip. Tours that are offered take you along the river on a boat while you listen to Hawaiian music and legends. The river passes by the Fern Grotto, where the singers continue to dance as you admire the grotto.
- Makai Golf Course
The course was just remodeled adding paspalum turf, and other things too. If a golfer wants a leisurely game they can go to this course.
- Na Ania Kai Arboretum
These thirteen gardens span 240 acres and are graced with flowers, more than seventy sculptures, a beach, hardwood plantation, romantic canyon draped with ferns and moss, and a tranquil meadow. It is the perfect place for flower and garden lovers, with trails that wind through ferns, orchids, hibiscus, lobelia, viola, gardenia, geranium, and other sights of natural beauty.
- Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park
With a length of ten miles, breadth of two miles, and a depth of 3, 600 feet, this canyon is quite a majestic sight. The river cliffs are red, brown and green – the result of volcanic flows. The Kokee State Park boarders the canyon, and provides more than 45 hiking trails throughout its more than 4, 000 acres.
- Visit Limahuli Garden and Preserve
This 1,000 acre garden, voted best botanical garden by the American Horticultural Society, covers three different ecological zones along the north shore. There are tons of flowers that you can see as you walk along some of these trails.
- The North Shore
The north shore beaches are lined with trails that are good for hikers that like a challenge.
One of the most unique beaches along the North Shore is Glass Beach. With copious amounts of smooth, polished glass along its shore, along with other treasures that wash up, it is a great beach for beach combers. The strong currents and high surf make it great for surfing and windsurfing, but may not be pleasant for recreational swimming.
- Kauai Plantation Railway
This railway runs traditional cars through fields of sugar, native wildflowers, and pineapple, banana, papaya, coffee, and hardwood trees.
- The South Shore
Sunsets, wildlife, blowholes and many towns make this a nice peaceful retreat for your enjoyment. This is a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving where you swim with dolphins, whales and all sorts of fish.
- Kauai Waterfalls
There are many beautiful waterfalls throughout the island that are well worth seeing.
If you drive along Highway 56 and come close to the 25 mile marker you will find the Kalihiwai Falls. It has a small pool at the base, flows into the Kalihiwai Bay, and can be reached by car, hiking, or on horseback.
The Kipu Falls is a great favorite among both locals and tourists, as can be noted by an inviting little rope swing that hangs on a nearby tree. Below the falls is a deep and clean pool that is surrounded by walls of rock that make for a perfect place to jump down into the water.
